My understanding is that Lawvere was forced out in 1971, but welcomed back for the Category Theory conf. in 1995 (he was only visiting on that occasion :)). I think that the topic of how mathematics (or maybe its just the mathematicians) runs up against politics would make an interesting series of posts. Hope to see more at some point.<br /><br />BTW, my understanding is that many Category Theorists don't mind the term "abstract nonsense" and have appropriated it somewhat. While at the chalkboard and carrying out some "routine" diagram pasting they'll say "and now by the usual abstract nonsense we get the result..."dan.mackinnonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13603404133431327842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2433841880619171855.post-92190564236529729622011-02-15T05:38:53.108+00:002011-02-15T05:38:53.108+00:00Kevin, I think the early term was "general a...Kevin, I think the early term was "<b>general</b> abstract nonsense" which may still apply in my limited understanding.Pat's Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15234744401613958081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2433841880619171855.post-51319393827557903422011-02-15T00:06:59.245+00:002011-02-15T00:06:59.245+00:00In 1970, wasn't Category Theory still called A...In 1970, wasn't Category Theory still called Abstract Nonsense? I thought that the renaming to Category Theory occured in the late 70s.Kevinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14528751349030084532noreply@blogger.com
